Group Presentation
Each group will focus upon globalization in comparative perspective to highlight the pros and cons for specific types of states and regions, as well as identify potential adjustment strategies. They will compare the impact of globalization upon their selected state with the impact on other states. For example, if a group looked at Vietnam then they might compare it to another state in the region (such as Thailand) as well as a state which might represent a very different developmental and regional category and globalization experience (such as Germany).
Each group will discuss whether the quality, character, and effects of globalization are typical for a state from a particular region and developmental level. For example, Malaysia might be considered an emerging state but really has a level of globalization comparable to developed states. Of course, this is at the aggregate, students then will need to disaggregate data to see who benefits and who loses within Malaysia. They should consider political, economic, social, cultural, and environmental effects.
Groups will not need to write reports, but rather will create power points for the class presentation (which will last about 15 minutes). They also will need to submit to me with their powerpoint, a bibliography and a list of discussion questions to generate discussion, analysis and reflection from their classmates following the presentation.
