Learn about our policies regarding cancellations, frequency of appointments, and more, as well as read our general FAQs for students, faculty and staff interested in utilizing the TWC.
Students can schedule up to two hours of writing consultations and two hours of content tutoring per week. However, you can also schedule appointments many weeks in advance, so if you anticipate visiting the TWC frequently, you can schedule several sessions well ahead of time.
Because our schedule tends to fill up quickly, we ask that appointments be cancelled at least 18 hours in advance.
You can cancel your appointment from your Bookings confirmation email or by logging into Outlook, selecting your appointment from your calendar, and editing your RSVP to "decline."
If you cancel on the same day as your appointment or miss your appointment, no other students can meet with the tutor at that time. To protect our tutors' time and to help ensure that students who want an appointment in the TWC can get one, we have a strict policy regarding missed appointments. Repeated no-shows or same-day cancellations may result in your scheduling privileges being revoked.
The TWC is closed when the College is closed, including on Fox Day.
Our writing consultants and tutors are happy to work with you on a collaborative project, but we do ask that all members of the group are present for the session. Please indicate on your appointment report form that you are working on a group assignment and include the names of your group members.
Our tutors and writing consultants are not permitted to work with you on a take home exam or quiz unless you have received express permission from your professor to do so. If you have gotten this permission, please have your professor notify Layne Porta or Mistie Watkins before your tutoring session. This policy upholds the Rollins College academic honor code, which states:
On my honor, I have not given, nor received, nor witnessed any unauthorized assistance on this work.
We try to offer tutoring in as many classes as possible. However, if you are trying to schedule an appointment in EAB/Navigate and you aren’t able to find a tutor for one of your classes, we may still be able to help!
Email tutoring&writing@rollins.edu and let us know. And keep in mind that you can meet with a writing consultant to talk about writing for any course or assignment.
You can schedule your tutoring appointment through Microsoft Bookings. Please see our Schedule an Appointment page for details.
You can cancel your appointment from your Bookings confirmation or by logging into Outlook, selecting your appointment from your calendar, and editing your RSVP to "decline." Please note that appointments must be canceled at least 18 hours in advance in order to not be marked as a missed appointment.
In some cases, we may be able to create an “off-schedule” appointment to meet your needs. Email tutoring&writing@rollins.edu with the following information:
We will do our best to accommodate your schedule!
Absolutely! If you’d like to make an appointment to work on a collaborative project, please make sure all group members are present. When you schedule the appointment in Bookings, you can indicate that it is a group project in the appointment notes. Please also list the names of all group members in the appointment notes. If you have any questions, let us know.
Our tutors and writing consultants are students at Rollins. We have tutors across all majors and degree programs on campus. To find out more about our tutors, please visit the subpages under Meet with a Tutor.
All of our tutors go through a training program during the first semester they tutor. During this time, we work with our new tutors to give them strategies and ways of thinking about peer tutoring that help them support you and your learning.
If you are an undergraduate student, you and your professor can access the appointment summary from your TWC visit at any time through EAB/Navigate. You can access your appointment summary by logging on at rollins.okta.com and selecting EAB Navigate. Select your “Reports” tab. Then click "View Report" to see the details of your appointment.
If you are a graduate student, please email tutoring&writing@rollins.edu to receive a copy of your session report.
Of course! We welcome all members of the Rollins community! If you are comfortable disclosing any accommodation needs or other requests with us, we are very happy to adjust our tutoring strategies to help you learn in a way that is best for you. For more information, please see our Accessibility and Accommodations statement on our About Us page.
If you need assistance using our online scheduling system, contact Mistie Watkins at mwatkins@rollins.edu or 407-646-2607.
We typically conduct hiring before or at the beginning of each semester. Our application can be found through Handshake.
Nope! Our writing consultants can work with you at any point in your writing process. Even if you are just beginning to formulate your ideas or trying to understand an assignment description, our consultants are happy to work with you.
No--all of our services and resources are completely free to use.
Professors are often impressed by students who choose to strengthen their skills and deepen their understanding of subject matter through peer tutoring. Peer tutoring is all about collaborative learning. We strive to create an environment in which you can set your own academic and intellectual goals and work towards them in ways that fit you best.
Making time to visit the TWC is a great way for you to express and feel greater ownership over your educational journey at Rollins, and professors recognize this benefit.
If you know a student who would be an excellent peer educator, please use this form to recommend them at any time: https://forms.office.com/r/VXuSD4WiUM.
Although we usually conduct hiring only at the beginning of each semester, this link will remain active, so feel free to recommend a student whenever you think about it and we will contact them when our application opens for the upcoming semester.
Our content tutors and writing consultants are trained in providing responsive feedback and working with students to deepen their understanding of course concepts. Many students often find that talking with a peer when they feel stuck in their classes can be a more low-stakes way of getting the help they need to be more successful. However, whether your students are struggling in your class or excelling, meeting with a peer tutor is a way for them to engage with their education in new, meaningful ways.
While our one-on-one tutoring is often geared toward students, there are many ways that the TWC can help you work towards your own teaching and professionalization goals.
Specifically, we can:
We always welcome suggestions or questions about how we can support staff and faculty at Rollins.
The campus-wide transition to EAB Navigate has allowed us to offer you more direct access to undergraduate students' appointment summaries. To see a student's appointment summary at any time, follow these steps:
We're so glad you're interested in inviting us to your class! Simply email Layne to get started. We'll work with you directly to design a workshop that complements your course and addresses your students' needs.
Thank you for helping us get the word out!
One option is to invite us to your class for a brief (about 10 minutes) introduction to our services. We find that students are more likely to visit us if they meet someone from the TWC face-to-face first. While these visits are particularly beneficial at the beginning of the semester, we're happy to come by any time.
You might also consider adding a statement about the Tutoring and Writing Center to your syllabus or making an announcement about our services on Canvas. If you are unsure what to say about us, feel free to borrow from the following:
The Tutoring and Writing Center offers one-on-one appointment-based tutoring and writing consulting as well as drop-in hours and study groups. These sessions are run by content tutors and writing consultants who are your fellow Rollins students. TWC services are completely free to use and are designed for all students, whether particular academic subject, or you simply want to understand your own learning and writing processes better.
That's great! We really appreciate your trust in us and your willingness to embed our services into your course.
The earlier you can let us know that this will be a requirement for your class, the better. Our schedule tends to fill up quickly, particularly in the last four weeks of classes. (Please note: our schedule ends on the last day of regularly scheduled classes each semester. We are closed during the week of finals so that our tutors have time to conclude their own coursework.) The sooner we know that your students will be visiting, the more likely it is that we can make sure there is enough availability in the schedule for all of them to get appointments.
If you are requiring your students meet with a writing consultant, please instruct them to let the consultant know that the session report needs to include the course number (that way you can distinguish the relevant TWC visit from others your student may have had).
We would also encourage you to take a couple steps to help this required visit be as beneficial as possible for your students:
Adding a peer tutor to your course on Canvas is a great way to make sure they can access your syllabi, assignment descriptions, and relevant announcements. These materials help them stay in the know as they work with your students. If you would like to add the peer tutor(s) for your course to your Canvas, follow these steps:
This is a good question. The short answer is that the TWC is not a homework check or editing service, which means that our tutors' job is not to perfect the product that your student plans to turn in, but rather to serve as a resource and collaborator in their learning process. However, we know it is frustrating when it seems that tutoring sessions are not leading to the desired results. We also know that sometimes this gap is indicative of larger issues. In general, there are a couple common reasons why a student who visited the TWC isn't showing the improvement you envisioned: the tutor and student may not have had sufficient time to address every issue, there may have been miscommunications or misunderstandings between the tutor and student, or the student's goals for their time in tutoring may not align with your own. Whatever the case, we welcome the opportunity to discuss these gaps with you, and to work together on meeting the needs of your students. Please reach out to Layne with your feedback.
We know that several departments on campus have specific requirements and expectations for research papers and other writing assignments. We are committed to supporting your departmental guidelines and working with our tutors and consultants to make sure they know that these guidelines exist and where to find them. If you find that a student receives feedback from a tutor or consultant that contradicts the guidelines set by your department, please let us know.
