Wetland Controversy Assignment/Thoughts From the Legendary Prince

Florida Wetlands Resources

General Databases

While not specific to the sciences, these databases can be good starting points for research papers. They represent a wide variety of material and can assist with everything from giving a general introduction to a topic to providing scholarly, peer-reviewed articles.  They can also be good sources for non major courses.

Wetlands Controversy Assignment--Helpful Hints

1.) For background on your specific wetland area you will need to search local newspapers and Florida web resources which are provided to you in the boxes below.

2.) For rules and regulations regarding wetlands you will need to consult Florida and Federal websites.  You may also find it necessary to look at local government websites and consult specific sources, such as town board meeting minutes.

3.) It is often a very good idea to consult any specific documents mentioned in an article.  For example, if a specific study that plays a key role is mentioned you should track it down and review it.  It can provide you with further information, context, and enable you to strengthen your argument.

4.) What are some important issues surrounding your specific wetland?  Tourism?  Business?  Conservation?  Endangered plants and/or animals?  Looking for some broader research in these potential areas of interest can strengthen your argument.  Look for something that interests you--it will make for a more convincing not to mention interesting assignment. We have a variety of databases that can point you to relevant research based on your interests.  It is important to be mindful that various groups will have specific interests and be aware of how governmental agencies operate during different administrations and timeframes.  Think critically! When in doubt, ask!

5.) Need help developing your argument?  Finding relevant resources and research?
