Textbook Affordability Grant Opportunities

The Olin Library is offering a grant opportunity to provide students with no-cost textbook options. Participating instructors will be offered a $150 stipend to recognize their work in implementing affordable textbook solutions in their courses. In addition to the stipend, the library will acquire loanable textbooks in affordable formats for all enrolled students in the course. 

Applications are accepted throughout the year, with two review periods annually: July 1st and November 1st.

Grant Eligibility

  • All current instructors at Rollins College are eligible to apply. 
  • The course must be offered during the academic year for which the grant is awarded. The course must be taught using the grant-funded textbooks at least twice.  
  • Applicants must demonstrate that they have considered Open Educational Resources (OER) as a potential solution in the Textbook Affordability Grant application.

Grant Support

I. Instructor Stipend

The grant provides a $150 stipend to the grantee in recognition of their efforts to reduce textbook costs and improve course affordability. 

III. Library Textbook Support

The library will acquire a class set of textbooks through the purchase of new or used copies, previous editions, or digital formats to support student access. The level and format of support will be based on factors such as: 

  • Course enrollment size  
  • Number of credit hours  
  • Anticipated student need for access to materials 
  • Course iterations per academic year 
  • Availability of used, previous edition, or digital formats 
  • Current textbook cost 
  • Textbook availability 

Grant Application Process

I. Submission

Grant applications should be submitted via the Textbook Affordability Grant form

II. Deadline

Applications are accepted throughout the year, with two review periods annually: July 1st and November 1st

III. Review 

Proposals will be reviewed by Olin Library’s OER Group, considering factors such as the number of students impacted, the long-term use of the textbooks, the availability of storage space, purchase availability, and the potential to use affordable formats such as previous editions or digital copies. The application will be graded and awarded based on the Textbook Affordability Grant Evaluation Rubric.  

Grant Conditions

  • Textbook Purchase: In addition to the stipend, the library will acquire a class set of textbooks for the course, including physical or digital copies, used books, or previous editions, based on course needs, availability, and mutual agreement between the instructor and the library. 
  • Sustainability: The grantee must commit to using the textbooks for a minimum of 2 semesters. 
  • Checkout and Storage: The library will manage the checkout process and provide storage for the textbooks when not in use. Textbooks will be checked out to students for the duration of the class.
