Index is the only database that allows for international comparison of information on books published in translation, but its reliability is sometimes disputed, even in cases when information is regularly provided by the designated national partner.

Study includes the first ever accurate figures for the number of translated titles published in the British Isles and recommends a mechanism to collect further data.

A data table (available for xls download) that provides statistics regarding: language spoken at home and difficulty speaking English; number of children ages 5-17 who speak a language other than English at home by language spoken and ability to speak English; and the percentages of those speaking a language other than English at home and those with difficulty speaking English by selected characteristics, selected years 1979-2010.

The current language use questions, in use since 1980, gather how many people speak a language other than English at home, what languages are spoken, and how well English is spoken.
