Find Books
Olin Library has a strong collection of sociology books, both in print and electronically (eBooks).
Every print book in the library is assigned a call number. This is a series of letters and numbers that help us know where to shelve a book. These can typically be found on the spine of a book, although sometimes they are on the cover if the spine is too thin. The call numbers will all start with one or two letters, these relate to the broad subject of the book. The numbers help us narrow down the topic. At the bottom of this page you'll find a table to help you navigate print books about political science. If you need help finding a book on the shelf, stop by the Circulation Desk on the 2nd (main) floor and someone will be happy to go with you.

Cultural Perspectives on Aging by
Current demographic developments and change due to long life expectancies, low birth rates, changing family structures, and economic and political crises causing migration and flight are having a significant impact on intergenerational relationships, the social welfare system, the job market and what elderly people (can) expect from their retirement and environment. The socio-political relevance of the categories of 'age' and 'ageing' have been increasing and gaining much attention within different scholarly fields. However, none of the efforts to identify age-related diseases or the processes of ageing in order to develop suitable strategies for prevention and therapy have had any effect on the fact that attitudes against the elderly are based on patterns that are determined by parameters that or not biological or sociological: age(ing) is also a cultural fact. This book reveals the importance of cultural factors in order to build a framework for analyzing and understanding cultural constructions of ageing, bringing together scholarly discourses from the arts and humanities as well as social, medical and psychological fields of study. The contributions pave the way for new strategies of caring for elderly people.

The Sociology of W. E. B. du Bois by

Research Tip
You might notice that the print books highlighted here have a call number that starts with HM. This is the area of the library where you will find books covering Sociology. In the Olin Library it's on the 1st floor (one flight down from the Main Floor where you enter). Turn right at the bottom of the stairs or just off the elevator and look for the H's on the book spines.
Note: HV is on the 3rd floor (one flight up from the Main floor) of the Olin Library. Turn left once you reach the 3rd floor and look for the H's on the book spines.
