Arte Público Press of the University of Houston announces the publication of In Other Words: Literature by Latinas of the United States, an anthology of Hispanic women's writing edited by Roberta Fernández.
Dr. Fernández has gathered the best and most representative examples of fiction, poetry, drama and essay currently being written by Latina writers of the United States. The work is arranged by genre, and topics are as varied as the voices and styles of the writers: the challenge of living in two cultures; experiencing marginality as a result of class, ethnicity and/or gender; Latina feminism; the celebration of one's culture and its people. Most of the pieces are in English; some are presented bilingually in English and Spanish.
Included are most of the celebrated authors - Gloria Anzaldúa, Marjorie Agosín, Elena Castedo, Lorna Dee Cervantes, Lucha Corpi, Sandra María Esteves, Carolina Hospital, Aurora Levins Morales, Pat Mora, Cherríe Moraga, Nicholasa Mohr, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Estela Portillo, Dolores Prida, Cecilia Vicuña, Evangelina Vigil Piñón, Alma Villanueva and Bernice Zamora - to name just a few, as well as some new voices that will become part of the literary canon of the twenty-first century.
A preface and an introduction by the editor and a forward by the noted critic of Latin American literature, Jean Franco, serve to contextualize the writers and their work; a primary and secondary bibliography serves as an appendix.
